Google’s Olympic doodle today uses a rainbow flag and a quote on equality from the Olympic Charter to take a swipe at Russia’s treatment of gay people as the Winter Olympics get under way in Sochi.
Russia has been roundly criticised in the run-up to the games for its treatment of gay people, laws which ban what it describes as “homosexual propaganda” directed at minors, and warnings from Vladimir Putin and deputy prime minister Dmitry Kozak to gay athletes to “leave kids alone”.
Today’s doodle features a quote from the Olympic Charter, which underlines the importance of equality for all athletes competing in the games:
“The practice of sport is a human right. Every individual must have the possibility of practicing sport, without discrimination of any kind and in the Olympic spirit, which requires mutual understanding with a spirit of friendship, solidarity and fair play.”
Google doodles are often limited to certain country-specific domains, but this one appears to be global, featuring on numerous Google domains including google.ru, with the Olympic quote in Russian.
