Weekend viewing: The Invisible Universe of the Human Microbiome

This short animated film from NPR explores the complex relationship between people and the many microorganisms — bacteria, fungi and viruses — that populate our bodies, inside and out.

Despite our obsession with eradicating bacteria and other microbes we are completely covered in our own microscopic flora and fauna, and the majority are beneficial to our health or, at worst, benign. We generally become ill with infectious diseases when populated by bacteria that are more at home elsewhere, such as in soil or in the guts of other species. And our first line of defence against these infections is our own population of native microbes, something to remember next time you reach for the antibacterial soap.
